In 2007, The Education Trust reported how teacher salary gaps in some of the largest school districts in Texas shortchange low-income students and students of color.
The new report in this series, Their Fair Share: How Texas-Sized Gaps in Teacher Quality Shortchange Poor and Minority Students, outlines how year after year, low-income, Hispanic and African-American students in the state are:
- less likely to be assigned to fully certified teachers,
- less likely to be in classrooms with experienced teachers, and
- less likely to attend a school with a stable teaching force.
This report documents the teacher qualifications and experience gaps found in the state’s 50 largest school districts. In addition, it uncovers the average teacher salary gaps that often result from the concentration of inexperienced and underqualified teachers in high-poverty and high-minority schools.
If we're serious about closing our achievement gaps, we can't ignore the inequities in access to teacher talent. Download the new report now. Get the facts and learn what you can do to ensure that all Texas students get a fair share.
